Speaker: FUKUNAGA Genya (福永玄弥; Associate Professor; Diversity & Inclusion Section, College of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo)

Title: The Transnational Circulation of Anti-Transgender Hatred in East Asia (東アジアにおけるトランスジェンダー嫌悪のトランスナショナルな流通)

In this seminar, Professor Fukunaga will discuss how affective hostility toward transgender people and homosexuality circulates across national borders in East Asia, against the backdrop of the spread of right-wing movements and anti-gender movements in the region. In particular, the presenter will point out that a form of “single-issue alliance” (一点共闘) has emerged in various contexts, in which liberal groups, including leftists and feminists, and right-wing groups converge around hostile affect directed at transgender issues as a kind of “glue.” The seminar will examine the structures through which transphobia is amplified across borders.
