Title : Japanese Standard of Living, 1840-2023

Measuring the standard of living in the pre-modern period is one of the key themes of historical research. Not only because it helps understanding the past, but because it provides the necessary foundation for grasping how industrialization began and how human life has changed to this day .Ever since Kenneth Pomeranz`s groundbreaking research,  Many researchers have made various efforts to measure and analyze long-term changes in living standards in Asian countries over the past two decades. This study measured how Japan's standard of living has changed over the 150 years from the 1840s to today, using the key data of casualties of no relation (行旅死亡者) and examined what implications this has for understanding East Asian history.
