Korean Residents in Japan, East Asia: Beyond Diaspora
As of 2015, 50th Anniversary of Korea-Japan Normalization, 70 years since the end Second World War, and 100 years of Korean residents in Japan have occurred. Now would be the time to newly perceive the Korean residents in Japan, who have experienced both the settlement and globalization, by overcoming the current research method that focuses on diaspora experiences. Thus, SNU Institute for Japanese Studies will provide a place for discussing the “Korean residents in Japan, East Asia.”
At this symposium, we will discuss the economically diversified Korean residents in Japan, the population’s new identity in diversification and sophistication, the theoretical contemplation of East Asia’s co-existence through the population’s characteristics. In particular, the symposium will discuss the realistic and theoretical possibility of how the Korean residents in Japan, with the characteristics of originating from a divided nation and being a minority, could contribute to overcoming East Asia’s mainstream nation-state model and presenting a new co-existential model for East Asia’s peaceful future. We welcome you to the event for an engaging discussion.
