Summary
IJS’ History and Economy Research Team (the Economy Team) is proceeding a research on “High-Growth Era Energy Transition and Changing Lifeworld.” Before the publication this summer, we are holding a symposium to present and review the past research proceedings by the research team. Four advisors outside the Institute were invited for discussion. In the first session under the topic of “Energy Revolution and Awareness,” the team presented their review on the modernization of energy revolution and Japan Railways Tokaido Shinkansen Project, Advanced lifestyle during the high growth era through a case study in Senri Newtown Osaka, and the process of how postwar Japan’s nuclear power plant gained support from the mass and succeeded in institutionalizing nuclear power plant. In the second session, under the theme of “Everyday Life and Oil,” the Team discussed the antagonistic authorities and the public surrounding oil, changes in management and lifestyle in vehicle usage during energy revolution, and spatial-social change surrounding thermal power plants that increased electricity demand. During discussion, questions and suggestions for each study were made by the panel. Overall, the panel requested a more detailed look into the change of “lifeworld” and further coordination of the timing of the object of study. The Economy Team will publish their research results that include feedbacks from this symposium as part of “Library of Contemporary Japanese Life-World” series in July 2014.
