서울대학교 일본연구소는 국제화해학회(International Association for Reconciliation Studies, IARS)와 공동으로 2025년 7월 14일(월)부터 18일(금)까지 4박 5일간 서울대학교 호암교수회관 삼성컨벤션센터에서 제6회 국제화해학회 연례학술대회인 2025 서울대회(IARS Seoul Conference 2025)를 성공적으로 개최하였다. “Bridging a Division”(분단을 넘어서)을 대주제로 열린 이번 학술대회에는 아시아, 유럽, 북남미, 아프리카, 오세아니아 등 전 세계 5대륙 20여 개국에서 약 150명의 연구자, 활동가, 종교인들이 참가하였으며, 두 개의 특별 콘퍼런스와 26개의 패널 세션을 통해 다양한 발표와 활발한 토론이 진행되었다.
이번 학술대회는 식민 지배, 전쟁, 분단, 독재 등 한국 근현대사의 고통과 이를 극복해 온 경험을 중심에 두고, ‘기억–책임–화해’를 핵심 키워드로 삼아 동아시아의 역사적 갈등과 공존 문제를 비롯해 전 세계적인 갈등, 화해, 평화의 문제들을 다각도로 조망하였다. ▲전환기 정의와 국가폭력 ▲과거청산과 보상정치 ▲기억과 박물관 ▲화해의 신학과 종교 간 대화 ▲청년 세대의 서사와 상처 ▲탈식민과 정체성 ▲예술과 스토리텔링 등 폭넓은 주제를 포괄하였으며, 이론적 탐색과 지역별 사례가 교차하는 학제적 논의의 장이 마련되었다.
한국에서 처음으로 개최된 이번 국제화해학회 연례학술대회는 한국 사회 내부의 분열과 동아시아 지역의 갈등을 글로벌한 시각에서 돌아보는 중요한 계기가 되었다. 첫날에는 “한일 화해로 가는 멀고도 험한 길: 그 의미와 전망”(The Long and Winding Road to Korea-Japan Reconciliation: What It Means and Promises)을 주제로 한 이종원 와세다대학 및 릿쿄대학 명예교수의 기조강연과 ‘평화의나무합창단’의 환영 공연이 열렸고, 마지막 날에는 비무장지대 주변 민간인출입통제선 일대를 답사하는 특별 프로그램이 운영되어 참가자들이 분단의 현실을 현장에서 체감하고, 한반도와 서울을 ‘화해의 공간’으로 성찰하는 뜻깊은 시간을 가질 수 있었다.
국제화해학회는 2020년 설립 이후 매년 대륙을 순회하며 연례 학술대회를 개최해오고 있으며, 화해학 연구를 통해 기억, 정의, 평화, 시민성, 탈식민 담론을 재조명하는 새로운 학문적 기반을 구축해가고 있다.
