<강연요지>

In this lecture, I wish to address the issue of the ways in which, and the degree to which, the modern history of Japan shares much with a modern global history (both for better and for worse).  

One view of the topic is that Japan’s modern history is peculiarly or uniquely distorted and shameful, in the character of imperialism abroad and denial of democracy at home (before 1945).  Another is that this history is uniquely admirable, for example in the achievement of a capitalist industrial revolution and a constitutional political order long before any other non-western nation did so.

Certainly there is much to condemn in the character of Japanese imperialism, and much to admire in the way emergence of a modern nation-state.  But I would reject both these positions. Both the “deplorable” and “admirable” are part of a shared experience of modern world history.  

I will illustrate this point with examples from the history of Japan and Asia from the mid or late 19th through the 20th century.
