The 22nd Japan Diagnosis Seminar

Through the "Japan Diagnosis Seminar" series, IJS intends to discuss and evaluate diverse issues and agendas related to Japan. It is our attempt to analyze and predict the contemporary Japan's life scenes from diverse viewpoints. This seminar is open to anyone who is interested in the agenda, and everyone is free to join the discussion. The Background of Lecturor

Takakazu Matsuda is a current special advisor, an expert senior writer, and a political editoral writer to the Mainichi Shimbun. As a journalist, he has covered Japan's political scene for more than 40 years and is certainly an expert in Japanese politics.  After gradating from the department of literature at the Waseda University, Matsuda joined the Mainichi Shimbun in 1969. He worked at the Fukushima branch office and in the city desk at the Tokyo head office and started his career in the political desk in 1974. He was in the editorial board of "Sunday Mainichi", the Media Planning Department, the Political Desk, and the Yokohama branch office as a branchi manager, and he is serving as an editorial writer and an expert editting staff at the Tokyo head office since October, 1999. He also appeared in a TV program, "INsideOUT" (BS11), as a commentator, and served as a reporter in charge of the prime minister during the Hatoyama Yukio cabinet - a rare case for expert writers. He reported interviews and politial scenes at the residence of the primie minister through his weekly columm, "Matsuda Takakazu's journal of the Prime Minister" in the Mainichi Shimbun. His publication includes 「中曽根内閣史(History of Nakasone Cabinet)」(1995-7), 「日本政党史(History of Japanese Political Parties)」(2011), and he had published a political column, "永田町鳥瞰虫観(Upward and Downward View of Nakada-cho)" in a monthly journal, 「潮(Ushio)」.
